Homemade Buttermilk Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) Dry Yeast
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups (400ml) Buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • Approximately 5-6 cups (700-800g) All-Purpose Flour
  • Additional Goodies:
  • Buttermilk for brushing
  • Toppings: Poppy Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Chia Seeds, Sesame Seeds

Instructions

    Baking Time:
Approximately 25 minutes in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F) on both upper and lower heat.

    Activate the Yeast:
In a bowl, mix 1 packet of dry yeast with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Add a little warm water, stir, and let it froth for about 5 minutes.

  1. Combine the Good Stuff:
Pour in 1 3/4 cups of buttermilk, 1/4 cup of oil, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Gradually add 5-6 cups of all-purpose flour, mixing until it forms a soft, slightly sticky dough.
  2. Knead and Rise:
Knead the dough on a floured surface for a few minutes. Let it rise in a covered bowl until it doubles in size, usually around 1-2 hours.
  3. Shape and Second Rise:
Shape the dough into a loaf, place it in a greased pan, and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
  4. Brush and Sprinkle:
Brush the risen dough with buttermilk and sprinkle your favorite seeds on top—get creative!
  5. Bake to Perfection:
Pop it into a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F) for approximately 25 minutes, or until it's beautifully golden brown.
